What Is SkinPen® Microneedling?
When over-the-counter skin treatments aren't proving effective but you aren't ready for surgical procedures, consider minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatments such as microneedling with our SkinPen® system. Our skilled practitioners are happy to perform microneedling (collagen induction therapy) with the SkinPen at our office in Dallas, TX. Microneedling uses many fine needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries in the needed areas of the skin. The micro-injuries trigger the natural production of elastin and collagen, two nutrients that boost the appearance and health of your complexion. Easily combined with other treatments, like serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), microneedling can help minimize pores, stretch marks, and scars. Schedule a consultation at Phillip Dauwe, M.D. Plastic Surgery to learn more about the results of microneedling and ways to customize your treatment for your skin needs and goals.

Am I A Candidate for SkinPen® Microneedling?
You may benefit from microneedling treatments if you have light to mild complexion problems, like a decrease in firmness or an uneven texture. Microneedling treatments can also improve the look of stretch marks, scars, and pores. You must be willing to wait before seeing the results of your microneedling treatment since the elastin and collagen require time to have an effect on the skin; however, you will develop results that look natural and gain healthier overall skin.
How Does It Work?
A SkinPen microneedling treatment is completed in a treatment room in about 30 – 60 minutes with local anesthesia or numbing cream if preferred; however, patients generally feel mild or no pain and discomfort. The skin being addressed will be cleansed before the SkinPen handpiece is evenly passed over. After the microneedling is done, a topical treatment such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or a vitamin-infused serum may be applied so the nutrients can penetrate deeper into the skin. A moisturizer selected for your skin type will be massaged in along with UV protection because your skin will be more sensitive following the procedure.
Microneedling FAQ
How much does microneedling cost?
During your initial consultation, Dr. Dauwe will analyze your skin and then develop your personalized plan. Once this is done, He will explain your treatment costs and the procedure process. Phillip Dauwe, M.D. Plastic Surgery often has discounts on skin treatment packages, so be sure to ask about current deals during your appointment.
What exactly is microneedling?
Collagen induction therapy or microneedling is a nonsurgical procedure to rejuvenate your skin. A natural fibrous protein, collagen helps your skin stay supple, smooth, and tight. As you get older, your natural supply of collagen are reduced and your skin gets thin and loses elasticity. Microneedling creates small wounds in your skin. These micro-injuries force your skin to increase its collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. After a short recovery period, your skin looks healthier, firmer, and brighter.
Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
During the microneedling process, channels are made that help other treatments to reach the lower layers. That's why microneedling is often done with other skin treatment, like special serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling with PRP is more commonly known as a vampire facial. During your initial consultation, Dr. Dauwe can explain what treatments would enhance your microneedling and which can help your skin's health.
How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Usually, patients get 3 – 6 sessions to achieve their best results. Although, the number of sessions you require will vary based on your goals and the condition of your skin. Microneedling can be safely performed every 4 – 6 weeks as needed. During your initial consultation, Dr. Dauwe will estimate the number of sessions you might need after assessing your skin and listening to your goals. Once your skin goals are reached, Dr. Dauwe suggests scheduling maintenance treatments about twice a year.
Is microneedling safe for everyone?
On the whole, microneedling is appropriate for all skin tones and types. Skin injuries created by microneedling are so minor there are very few side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be applied to most skin areas, including the arms, face, neck, chest, and legs. Microneedling isn't recommended if you have used Accutane in the last few months, plus if you have an active skin infection, herpes simplex, or open wound. Additionally, you might not be able to get microneedling if you are nursing, pregnant, or undergoing radiation treatments.
Is there any downtime after microneedling?
Downtime is minimal, with most patients returning to normal activities the next day. However, it's recommended to avoid strenuous activities and direct sun exposure for a few days post-treatment.
