Choosing Between a Lip Flip and Lip Fillers

There are many ways to enhance your lips and provide them with real definition and shape. But what if you are uninterested in invasive procedures or silicone implants? Phillip Dauwe, M.D. Plastic Surgery now offers nonsurgical treatments that improve your appearance without any downtime or surgery.

BOTOX wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers are most known for reducing fine lines and volume loss in the face. But did you know that these cosmetic injectables can also provide the perfect pout?

Below, our board-certified plastic surgeon in Dallas explains the difference between a BOTOX "lip flip" and fillers. We also provide tips on how to decide which treatment is right for your needs. Call now for a consultation with Dr. Phillip Dauwe and see the amazing results for yourself.

What is a lip flip?

Pouty lips are defined by a strong Cupid's bow and well-defined border. So, how do you get lips like that without implants?

A lip flip is a procedure that uses botulinum toxin (i.e., BOTOX) to relax the muscles around your mouth. This "flips" them outward, creating the illusion of a full pout.

A BOTOX lip flip is ideal for individuals with thin lips that have little definition. It can also balance out an imbalanced smile, such as when one side of your mouth turns up more than the other.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are what they sound like – cosmetic injectables that add volume to your lips. There are many different formulas available, each designed to meet your unique goals.

The most popular lip filler on the market today is JUVÉDERM®. This smooth gel formula contains hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in your body. Hyaluronic acid helps add hydration and volume while also providing smooth, natural-looking results.

Another popular product used for lip augmentation is Restylane®. This formula is similar to JUVÉDERM but tends to be more cohesive.

What does an appointment look like?

Only a plastic surgeon in Dallas or another qualified injector can perform a BOTOX lip flip or dermal fillers. During this consultation, Dr. Dauwe will examine your features and discuss your aesthetic goals. We then make recommendations about the best course of action moving forward.

A lip flip involves administering small amounts of BOTOX into specific points around your mouth using a small needle. The treatment takes about ten minutes and requires no anesthesia.

Dermal fillers are injected in much the same way as BOTOX. We usually start with a small amount of product and add more as needed. Results are immediate, though it may take a few days for the filler to settle into place.

What to expect after BOTOX and fillers

Most patients report feeling minimal discomfort during injections at our clinic. Though you are free to return to normal activities right away, we suggest avoiding strenuous exercise and pressing down on the treatment areas.

The results of a BOTOX lip flip can take two weeks to develop fully. These outcomes usually last for about four months before touch-ups are needed. Dermal fillers provide immediate results that can last anywhere from 6 – 12 months, based on the formula used.
