What is Genioplasty or Chin Augmentation?

Chin enhancement surgery (or chin augmentation) is a highly sought after cosmetic treatment that improves the appearance of the jawline and chin. When a chin lacks shape and size, it can create a weak profile and contribute to neck fullness that is often confused with fat tissue. Several aesthetic enhancements can be performed to highlight your chin, and one of the most common procedures is surgically moving the chin forward to establish a more prominent jawline and a more appealing neck profile. A chin implant can offer the same benefits. In Dallas, TX, plastic surgeon Dr. Phillip Dauwe offers surgical and non-surgical options to consider for your chin enhancement. If a genioplasty or chin implant are not right for you, a noninvasive augmentation with fillers can help add projection and contour. This can be combined with Coolsculpting or Kybella to address the neck fat under your chin.

What Are The Benefits Of Chin Augmentation?

A personalized chin augmentation procedure designed by Dr. Dauwe can provide a subtle yet dramatic enhancement to your face with benefits including:

  • Strengthening a small or weak chin
  • Defining and enhancing the jaw line and profile
  • Reducing the appearance of a double chin
  • Diminishing large jowls
  • Balancing facial symmetry
  • Surgery uses hidden incisions
  • Results are permanent

Am I A Candidate for Genioplasty or Chin Implants?

Chin enhancement (augmentation) is an aesthetic option for men, as well as women. If you are self-conscious because of the look of your chin, lack of definition, or under-projected profile, this cosmetic enhancement can address all these elements. Additionally, a chin implant will improve the lower region of your face and neck by suspending the tissues and enhancing the contour of these areas. It's also fairly common for our patients to get a rhinoplasty when they have their chin augmentation procedure. This combination of cosmetic enhancements offers great results.

What Are my Options for Chin Augmentation?

There are three options for chin augmentation, a genioplasty, chin implant, or chin fillers.

A genioplasty is a chin augmentation procedure that moves the bone of your chin forward. This is the most popular and powerful way to augment your chin, because it uses your own tissues without synthetic implants. A small incision is made on the inside of your mouth, to avoid any visible incisions. The chin bone is positioned in a more projected position and secured to give a permanent change to your chin and neck.

A chin implant augments the chin by providing more shape and projection with a silicone implant. The incision is carefully made just under your chin, a pocket is made, and the chin implant is positioned on top of the bone. Thin sutures are used to close the incisions, and your chin will be wrapped with bandages.

Fillers can also be used for chin augmentation. This can be performed in the office and does not require surgery. This is the least powerful method of chin augmentation, but it is less invasive and requires less recovery.

How Does Chin Augmentation Work?

Chin enhancement surgery creates immediate, noticeable results, which is life transforming for our patients. Even though swelling will be present after your surgery, this only lasts a short while. For many, chin augmentation takes about 2 – 3 weeks of healing. Exercise should not be performed during this time. This particular surgery has historically high success rates and by having it under the hands of a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Dauwe, your outcome is very predictable.

Genioplasty and Chin Implant FAQ

How much does chin augmentation cost?
Dr. Dauwe can begin to estimate your costs for a genioplasty or chin implant in your initial consultation as soon as your surgical plan is created. Your cost will be based on the type of chin implant you select, along with anesthesia and facility fees. Phillip Dauwe, M.D. Plastic Surgery takes several payments and we will give you information on no-interest financing, which can make your surgery more affordable.

Will augmentation fix my double chin?
Yes it certainly will! Surgical chin augmentation is meant to give you a stronger, sharper look to your lower face. It can help contour your neck as well, but if you have excess fat in your submental area (the upper neck below the jawline) you may need liposuction as well. Occasionally, neck liposuction on its own can give you a better jawline and appearance without chin augmentation surgery. Dr. Dauwe will examine your lower face, go over your goals, and make recommendations at your first appointment.

Can I combine other facial surgeries with chin augmentation?
Many people get a chin implant along with another facial surgery such as buccal fat pad removal or nose reshaping surgery. Dr. Dauwe can help you choose the procedures that match your concerns and desires in your initial consultation. It might be challenging to decide by yourself what procedure(s) might be best for you, which is why your consultation with Dr. Dauwe is crucial. He will use his years of experience to help you create your custom plan.

Are there nonsurgical procedures to improve my chin and neck?
The nonsurgical options that Dr. Dauwe recommends are chin augmentation with fillers, and your neck can be improved with nonsurgical methods such as Coolsculpting or Kybella. CoolSculpting kills the fat with cold energy, and the body gradually absorbs them. Kybella is injected into the fat and kills the fat cell, which is then absorbed by the body in the same manner. Both methods have been cleared by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to eliminate subcutaneous fat. Tell Dr. Dauwe in your initial consultation so he can review your options and choose what's best to fit your goals.

What's the difference between chin augmentation and genioplasty?
Chin augmentation surgery, mentoplasty, is a procedure that builds your chin with an implant or filler. Genioplasty is a procedure that repositions the chin bone with plates and screws. Dr. Dauwe will decide which surgery better suits you based on your anatomy and how much change you want to make. While the genioplasty is the preferred option for larger changes, a chin implant can make significant changes too. Dr. Dauwe can help you choose whether to get a genioplasty or chin implant alone.
