What Is Genioplasty or Chin Augmentation?

Chin enhancement surgery (or chin augmentation) is a highly sought-after cosmetic treatment that improves the appearance of the jawline and chin. When a chin lacks shape and size, it can create a weak profile and contribute to neck fullness that is often confused with fat tissue.

Several aesthetic enhancements can be performed to highlight your chin, and one of the most powerful techniques available is genioplasty, which involves surgically moving the chin forward to establish a more prominent jawline and a more appealing neck profile. Genioplasty is not commonly performed at most practices, making it a distinctive option available at Dauwe Plastic Surgery for those seeking advanced facial contouring. A chin implant can offer similar benefits by improving projection and balance through the use of a precisely shaped silicone implant.

Dallas-based plastic surgeon Dr. Phillip Dauwe offers surgical and non-surgical options to consider for your chin enhancement. If a genioplasty or chin implant are not right for you, a non-invasive augmentation with fillers can help add projection and contour. This can be combined with KYBELLA® or awake neck liposuction to address the fat under your chin.

What Are My Options for Chin Augmentation?

There are three options for chin augmentation: a genioplasty, chin implants, or chin fillers.

Genioplasty

A genioplasty is a chin augmentation procedure that moves the bone of your chin forward. This is the most popular and powerful way to augment your chin, because it uses your own tissues without synthetic implants. A small incision is made on the inside of your mouth, to avoid any visible incisions. The chin bone is positioned in a more projected position and secured to give a permanent change to your chin and neck.

Chin Implants

A chin implant augments the chin by providing more shape and projection with a silicone implant. The incision is carefully made just under your chin, a pocket is made, and the chin implant is positioned on top of the bone. Thin sutures are used to close the incisions, and your chin will be wrapped with bandages.

Chin Fillers

Fillers can also be used for chin augmentation. This can be performed in the office and does not require surgery or downtime. While it is the least powerful method of chin augmentation, it is less invasive, requires less recovery, and offers temporary yet noticeable enhancement. Chin fillers can be a great choice for patients who want to preview potential surgical results or achieve subtle improvements in shape, contour, and definition without committing to a permanent procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chin Augmentation

  • Will augmentation fix my double chin?

Yes, chin augmentation can dramatically improve the appearance of a double chin. This surgery is meant to give you a stronger, sharper look to your lower face. It can help contour your neck as well, but if you have excess fat in your submental area (the upper neck below the jawline) you may need liposuction as well. Occasionally, neck liposuction on its own can give you a better jawline and appearance without chin augmentation surgery. Dr. Dauwe will examine your lower face, go over your goals, and make recommendations at your first appointment.

  • Are there non-surgical procedures to improve my chin and neck?

The non-surgical options that Dr. Dauwe recommends include chin augmentation with fillers, and neck contouring with treatments like Kybella. This injectable called Deoxycholic acid addresses the fat tissue beneath the chin for a more defined jawline. During your consultation, Dr. Dauwe will review your goals and recommend the most effective non-surgical options for your needs.

  • What's the difference between chin augmentation and genioplasty?

Chin augmentation surgery, known as mentoplasty, is a procedure that builds your chin with an implant or filler. Genioplasty is a procedure that repositions the chin bone with plates and screws. The genioplasty has more power in the reshaping the neck because the muscles of the neck are repositioned into a tighter configuration with this technique. Dr. Dauwe will decide which surgery better suits you based on your anatomy and how much change you want to make. While genioplasty is the preferred option for larger changes, a chin implant can make significant changes too. Dr. Dauwe can help you choose whether to get a genioplasty or chin implant alone.
