Will Laser Acne Treatments Work for Me?

Getting laser acne treatments are usually reserved for patients who have really hard to treat acne, which has previously been treated with oral and topical medications with no relief. These patients may exhibit skin damage from their acne blemishes with scars (pitting) and discoloration. Skin with severe acne will change the texture and tone of the skin, which may modify it to feel rough and look uneven. Patients with chronic acne may have unbalanced hormones or had really bad outbreaks during pregnancy when hormones levels varied.

How Does Laser Acne Treatment Work?

On the day of your treatment, we will welcome you to our office and escort you to one of our private laser treatment rooms. Your skin will be prepped for the laser treatment, which may last about 20 minutes. With our handheld laser device, we have the ability to cover a greater surface area and treat multiple issues in the same session. You will be given protective goggles to wear over your eyes prior to the start of your treatment. Either the IPL or Halo system will be used along the target area. These technologies will deliver heat or light energy to the skin's surface to cause micro-injuries to the skin. Your body will react to this proactively and heal the wounds with healthy new cells that will rejuvenate the skin naturally.

How Many Laser Acne Treatments Will I Need to See Results?

This technique has very little downtime. For best results, it is not recommended that you wear cosmetics on your skin for at least 24 hours. However, laser acne treatment will not keep you away from any of your daily activities. You may see some post-treatment redness and minor irritation to your skin, but these symptoms will fade away in a few days. Since Halo emits ablative and non-ablative wavelengths, most patients only need 1 – 2 treatments compared to 3 – 5 sessions with other fractional resurfacing lasers. IPL uses intense pulsed light to address skin concerns, requiring anywhere from 2 – 6 treatments for optimal results.

Laser Acne Treatments FAQ

How much does it cost?
The cost of your laser acne treatment will depend on the type of treatment used (IPL or Halo) and the number of sessions needed to attain the desired results. Dr. Dauwe or a member of our team can discuss costs in detail during your initial consultation.

Why Halo?
Halo is unique because it delivers both fractional (ablative) and non-fraction (non-ablative) wavelengths to the treatment area. This means less downtime and treatments compared to traditional lasers. Halo is also great for those with mild to severe acne or dermal concerns.

Why multiple sessions?
Dr. Dauwe understands that every case is different, which is why he creates a customized treatment plan for every patient. The number of treatments performed will depend on your condition and cosmetic goals. Some patients may only require one treatment to attain the outcome they want while others may need more.

Does it hurt?
A numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area prior to your session and Halo's integrated cooling system will allow for even greater comfort during your procedure. Most patients report that the minor discomfort felt during treatment is worth the results.

Aftercare?
Our office will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions for you to follow to enable optimal healing. We also advise that you refrain from direct sunlight for the first day after your treatment. Our aestheticians can also give you a list of skin care products that can help maintain the health of your complexion.
